“Pa amb tomàquet” (Catalan Tomato Bread) is one of the most iconic recipes from Catalan cuisine and it’s a proof that the best dishes are often the simplest. It can be eaten for breakfast, for dinner or as an appetizer. To make it more substantial, local people add some “jamón” and pair it with a good local red wine such as Clos Dalian Crianza.
Catalan Tomato bread is so easy to prepare that everybody can do it! The key is the quality of the ingredients. So let’s get started:
Ingredients
- Country-style, crunchy bread
- Ripened tomatoes
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Sea salt
Instructions
1. Slice the bread and grill both sides

4. Add a slice of “jamón”, cured cheese or anchovies to top your “pa amb tomàquet”
5. Enjoy!
Notes
Garlic lovers can add their favourite ingredient to this recipe. Just slice a clove of garlic in half and rub over the surface of the bread before rubbing the tomato. Then just follow the rest of the instructions.
Pairing
Catalan Tomato Bread is even more delicious if paired with a good local wine. For that we suggest Clos Dalian Red Crianza. This wine is produced in Terra Alta Designation of Origin. Located in south-western Catalonia, Terra Alta is well-known by its Garnacha wines. Clos Dalian Crianza is a Garnacha varietal. It has an aroma of leather, cherry and red fruits with a gentle touch of dried herbs. In the mouth, Clos Dalian Crianza shows flavors of cherry tomato, red plum, raspberry and vanilla finish. Overall it is meaty, balanced and well-rounded.
